Choose to change the world for homeless pets. Volunteer at the Siouxland Humane Society!
STEPS TO BECOME AN SHS VOLUNTEER:
- Read purpose statement and guideline for volunteers
- We will notify you of the next step depending on areas of interest selected.
- Fill out a volunteer application
If you sign up for in-shelter volunteering, the first step is to attend a volunteer orientation. At orientation, you will learn more about the SHS, its programs, and what you can do to help. Pre-registration is required. Please note that filling out an application does not register you. Watch your emails for information on how to sign up for an orientation.
When: Orientations are generally held once a month, twice a month during the summer. Check out our Events Calendar for upcoming dates!
Where: Orientations are held at the SHS, located at 1015 Tri-View Ave. Please plan to arrive on time or you will be asked to re-register for a different session.
Thank you for your interest in The Best Friends of the Siouxland Humane Society, our volunteer program. We named our program Best Friends because it seems that animals are oftentimes just that – our best friends! This program is our opportunity to return the favor!
As you may know, our organization is highly dependent on help from volunteers. Because we are funded solely by private donations, we simply cannot afford to hire all of the staff needed for our many programs and services. In other words, your willingness to join Best Friends will make a tremendous difference in the lives of Siouxland’s abused, neglected, and homeless animals.
The Siouxland Humane Society recognizes that its volunteers are busy people with different talents and interests. With this in mind, we have purposefully designed the Best Friends program so that it can be compatible with your needs, as well as those of the organization. For example, some people prefer to work directly with the animals, while others do not. Some want to bring humane education to the schools or contact legislators about animal welfare issues, while others foster the animal-human bond through our pet-facilitated therapy visits. Still others might want to engage in fund-raising activities such as our annual Gourmet Apple and holiday Paws ‘n’ Claus events. In other words, Best Friends is like a cafeteria where you can choose to participate in those activities that appeal to you and for which you have time.
Please read the Best Friends Purpose Statement and Guidelines, which describe the program, as well as the responsibilities of the individual volunteer. Then complete the Best Friends Registration form, and submit the form to us. In addition to getting your background information, the form lists the many activities that currently require help from volunteers. These have been collapsed into seven categories for purposes of internal record keeping. Please choose only 2 activities to participate in, a maximum of 3 if one area chosen is fundraising.
