Dog Training Classes

We are excited to be able to offer dog training classes at our shelter. These classes are NOT a typical obedience class, they are focused on changing the mindset of the dog that is causing the behaviors so that obedience training can actually work.
These classes are taught by Gail Dickerson, a dog behavior specialist. Dickerson has been training dogs and their people for 30 years with experience in; troubled dog behavior, obedience, scent work, personal protection, agility, trick training etc. Currently Dickerson is the training director for a non-profit Service Dog organization and has produced approximately 300 task trained Service dogs over the past 9 years. Dickerson focuses on training the dog in front of you to get the dog you want without using aversive or compulsion-based methods.
Her education in the dog world includes certificates from Sirius Dog Training (Dr.Ian Dunbar), Dog Training College (UK), Canine Behavior Management (Canine Principles) and she is a certified mentor for the Animal Behavioral College and the CATCH dog training program. (Students from these programs travel to her training facility for externships to achieve their graduation certificates in practical knowledge)
Classes are $20 each and included the following training topics, Jumping Up, Leashing Walking and Engage your dog’s not to settle anxiety or excitement. A limit of six (6) dog/handler teams to a class, no flexi-leads (retractable leashes), a 6 foot leash and whatever collar/harness you typically use, lots of small, soft, smelly (like hot dogs) treats, some patience and a love for your dog that will allow you to have fun!
Only one sign up per session per dog/handler team per day. Dogs must be up to date on vaccinations including kennel cough and rabies. Dogs with human or dog aggression issues will not be able to attend at this time.
Handouts, recipes, challenge booklets to help you practice at home will be provided.
